KFS Report on Credit Card Use

The Kauffman Firm Study  reports that credit card debt reduces the likelihood that a new business will survive its first three years of operation.  The report,  The Use of Credit Card Debt by New Firms, states that for every $1,000 increase in credit card debt the probability a new firm will close will increase by 2.2 percent.  However, the study did not find a statistical relationship between the use of credit cards to fund start-up costs and the subsequent business closures.

Engaged Employees for Increased Productivity

In comparing job performance differences between unionized and non-unionized employees, researchers with Gallup Inc. found minimal differences in productivity.  However, they did find differences based on whether the company had highly engaged employees.  When the basic needs of employees are met in the workplace, these employees are more involved and enthusiastic.  “They are more productive, innovative, inclusive, and aligned with the objectives of the overall organization.” For the full article, go to the Gallup Management Journal, Employee Engagement and Labor Relations, 10 September 2009.

USDA Rural Development Grants and Loans

Promoting a dynamic business environment in rural America is the goal of Rural Development, Business and Cooperative Programs (BCP), and Business Programs (BP).  BP works in partnership with the private sector and the community-based organizations to provide financial assistance and business planning. BP helps fund projects that create or preserve quality jobs and/or promote a clean rural environment. The financial resources of BP are often leveraged with those of other public and private credit source lenders to meet business and credit needs in under-served areas. Recipients of these programs may include individuals, corporations, partnerships, cooperatives, public bodies, nonprofit corporations, Indian tribes, and private companies.
